Developing Biometric Detection Tools to Combat Online CSAM Distribution
The online distribution of child sexual abuse material (CSAM), encompassing sexual exploitation images and videos, remains a critical and pervasive threat. Detection and intervention are hindered by the immense volume of content, its graphic nature, and evolving dissemination tactics. While automated detection mechanisms have advanced significantly over the past decade, standard industry methods rely heavily on known hash values (digital fingerprints) and keyword matching. Consequently, these traditional approaches struggle to detect previously unidentified CSAM or uncover underlying operational networks.
To address these critical gaps, my research focuses on deploying biometrics and social network analysis (SNA) to identify novel CSAM, map structural relationships, and link media to known victims, offenders, and distribution networks. The ultimate objective is a real-time framework capable of scanning domains, processing media, and cross-referencing files across platforms to identify:
- Network Topologies & Evolution: Patterns and shifts in cross-platform distribution.
- Producer Identification: Visual and digital connections pointing to original creators.
- Geographic Localization: Textual, contextual, and metadata cues embedded alongside media to assist in locating offenders.
This work directly informs international policy and operational enforcement. Findings and methodologies have been shared with global bodies including the United Nations, major technology and social media platforms, non-profit organizations (e.g., the Internet Watch Foundation and the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children), and financial entities such as the Asia-Pacific Financial Coalition Against Child Sexual Exploitation. Additionally, these analytical tools and frameworks actively support international law enforcement agencies in ongoing investigative and intelligence operations.
